Experienced quality of life in women with endometriosis (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological disease that affects approximately ten percent of women of childbearing age. Despite this fact, there continues to be a lack of knowledge regarding the disease. Pain in connection to menstruation is normalized, thus the diagnosis of endometriosis can take many years and cause suffering for women. Aim The aim was to investigate how women diagnosed with endometriosis experience that the disease affects their quality of life (QoL). Method A general literature review was conducted based on ten qualitative studies published between 2004-2016. Result Women experience that all dimensions of quality of life are affected by endometriosis. Four themes illustrate how women experienced how the disease affected their QoL: The disease's impact on everyday life, The disease's impact on work and education, The disease's influence on relationships and fertility and Distrust and lack of support in health care. Conclusion Healthcare professionals play a significant role in supporting endometriosis patients and give them the qualifications and resources to take control of their illness in order to increase their perceived quality of life. Implications Continued research on endometriosis, both from a medical and from a nursing perspective, is recommended.
