2019 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesisAlternative title
Physical activity during psychiatric care : The inpatients´ experiences (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Nowadays there is evidence that physical activity works as a health promotion intervention in psychiatric inpatient care. More and more interventions are being introduced. To ensure the quality of care, more studies with inpatients experiences are requested.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the inpatient's experience of physical activity in a psychiatric inpatient care facility

Method: The study was conducted empirically with a qualitative, inductive approach with interview as a method. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews, the participants were ten psychiatric inpatients. The data were analyzed with qualitative content analysis.

Outcome: The results of the data analyze were compiled in three categories where one category consisted of five subcategories. Physical activity in the everyday life in the psychiatric ward: Arrangements and settings for physical activity. The training coach, The perceived effect of physical activity, The nurse-patient relationship becomes more equal and The patients suggestions of quality improvements, Barriers and Facilitators

Conclusion: In general, physical activity was viewed in a positive way by the inpatients; they felt empowered after exercise, especially when the staff participated. The complex everyday life of the ward also became easier to manage. The psychiatric nurse is suitable to recognize barriers and facilitators towards being physically active.

Clinical impact:  Physical activity can continue to be used as a psychiatric nursing intervention.
