Abstract [en]

Background: In a growing multicultural society, demands are placed on health care that includes understanding of cultural differences. Each individual care meeting contains new experiences and challenges in which nurses' core competence is tested when a basic care relationship is to be established. The view of equal care and people's equal value takes on different expressions and the need for cultural competence and knowledge of global health becomes more evident in health care.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe nurses' experience of multicultural nursing in health care.

Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach based on 10 scientific articles. The result is summarized from nine qualitative articles and one article with a mixed method where only the qualitative part was included in the result.

Result: The nurses' experiences describe a lack of knowledge about cultural differences in care. It causes uncertainty that affects communication and sometimes leads to prejudicial treatment towards patients of another culture. Nurses' self-reflection on their own approach, compassion and creativity in the cultural meeting is considered to influence the care relationship.

Conclusion: Increased competence development for nurses within the operations and clarification of the curriculum during nurses' basic education is considered a contributing factor in increasing the cultural competence in a multicultural care context.
