Abstract [en]

Background: Every individual has a right to rehabilitation according to the Swedish Health and Social Services law. This includes even the elderly and disabled. The health benefits of rehabilitation in the promotion and maintenance of health is well documented. A geriatric rehabilitation team can consist of both caregivers and relatives; such as family members, nurses, occupational therapists, patients, physicians, physiotherapists, social workers and other professionals. According to the literature the care provided by a team is influenced by different professions’ perspectives, knowledge and responsibility; which can hinder smooth co-operation in the rehabilitation process.

Aim: To explore the professionals’ experiences of co-operation in rehabilitation.

Methods: Ten interviews were conducted with professionals (occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses) working at three short-term living accommodations. The participants were asked about their experiences of co-operation in rehabilitation. The interviews were transcribed and analysed with qualitative content analysis.

Results: Three themes were formulated, describing co-operation in rehabilitation: “making contribution to communication”, “taking part in development of routines and goal-settings”, “having self confidence in professional skills when practising ones’ profession”.

Conclusion: Our study indicates the importance of being aware of communication, participation in development of routines and having self confidence in ones’ profession when practising co-operation in rehabilitation on a daily basis.
