Factors affecting nurse’s experience of euthanasia : A literature review (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Nurses have a key role in end-of-life care. This type of care can be complex and demanding where nurses may experience ethical dilemmas and difficulties in dealing with the patient's suffering. In society, there are different approaches to death where euthanasia is a controversial and debated topic.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe factors of importance to the nurse's experience of euthanasia.

Method: The study is a general literature review based on 12 scientific articles.

Result: The result was presented in two main themes and six categories: Nurses attitudes presented with the categories: individual life philosophy, life experiences and moral dilemmas and communication presented with the categories: nursing relationship, teamwork and participation in the euthanasia care.

Conclusion: Personal values could create inner conflicts, moral dilemmas and difficulties in managing these types of patients. An open and non-judging communication was important to maintain personalized care. Collaboration in the working team was essential to combat negative feelings related to euthanasia.
