How to enhance communication in emergency situations : A literature review (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: The care of patients is a team effort and communication is a central part in teamwork but communication is a large contributing factor for adverse events. Emergencies increases the difficulties and affect both the words spoken and how those are understood.

Aim: To describe how an optimal communication can look like and how communication can be improved in the interdisciplinary team in emergency situations.

Method: A literature review was chosen to get a picture of current knowledge. The result was based on 13 articles and was analysed based on Evans (2002) method.

Result: Team performed better with a clear leader and when team members communicated situation awareness between them. A faster completion of tasks was seen with the use of closed-loop communication. It was important to have a more equal team environment were every team member could speak up. Communication and teamwork could be improved with the use of simulation training.

Conclusion: How the team is structured affect how the communication works and in a well functioning team there is a clear leader which can see and distribute tasks between all resources. Communication can be improved when different methods is implemented like closed-loop communication and call out and simulation training is another way to increase communication in the team.

Suggestion for further research: What does communication look like in the clinical environment?

Abstract [sv]

Fortsatt forskning: Hur ser kommunikationen ut i praktiken?
