Patients' experiences of Tracheostomy : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Tracheostomy is an opening in the throat to ensure a clear airway. It is used in various conditions that can prevent the patient from breathing freely. Thanks to advanced tracheostomy care, more patients with upper airway obstruction survive. In order to be able to care for patients with a patient-centered approach, it is necessary to know how patients experience tracheostomy. Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe the patients' experiences with tracheostomy. Method: A literature study was conducted in Cinahl / medline, including nine qualitative articles. The information was analyzed with thematic analysis. Results: The patients experiences of tracheostomy differed due to the quality of care the patients received and how involved the patients were. One conclusion was that the patients` participation in their care improved the patients' situation, while the loss of voice was a great strain. Summary: The study showed that the patients` had difficulties communicating at first. The patients became frustrated when they woke up and suddenly could not speak. Physical feelings such as abandonment and isolation arose. When the patients after a while became involved in their own care, they accepted the tracheostomy and the feelings changed.
