Nurses experiences of caring for patients with dual diagnosis : A literature review (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Patients with dual diagnosis often have complex problems with a need for a wide spectrum of interventions.

Aim: The aim of the study was to highligt nurses experiences of caring for patients with dualdiagnosis.

Method: A literature review with an inductive and qualitative approach. Searches were performed using a systematic approach in the datases Cinahl, PubMed and PsycInfo. Afterquality review, a total of ten articles were included and then analysed using Graneheim & Lundmans method for qualitative analysis.

Results: The analysis resulted in two main themes, Competence and Organization. Competence with four subthemes; terminology, knowledge, care relationship and attitudes. Organizationwith four subthemes; guidelines, collaboration, support and security.

Conclusion: The results show that nurses feel that they lack sufficient competence to care forthis patient group. The results highlight the importance of common terminology, knowledgeabout dual diagnosis, care relationships characterized by genuine care and respectful attitudes. Nurses also experience deficient organizational conditions. The results highlight the importance of clearer guidelines, more favorable conditions for collaboration between psychiatric and addiction care, increased support through targeted efforts and resources aswell as a safe care environment. The authors suggest further research regarding both nurses' and patients' experiences of dual diagnosis care.
