Living with type 2 diabetes : A literature study (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) is a chronic disease and is one of the most common and rapidly growing diseases globally. Treatment and self-care of the disease requires plenty of lifestyle changes. The risk for physical diseases and mental illness is higher for people living with DMT2. The quality of life can be affected from chronic diseases. Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe people's experiences of living with DMT2. Method: Literature study with a qualitative approach. The results consist of ten qualitative research articles which were analysed with thematic analysis method. Results: Three main themes and six subthemes were identified. The first main theme: To manage Emotions included Fear from disease and Acceptance/normalization of living with a disease as subthemes. Second main theme: The need of support included Family and friends, and Knowledge of disease and selfcare. Third main theme: To be faced with lifestyle changes included Restrictions: Diet and physical activity, and Medication and blood sugar controls as subthemes. Conclusion: Based on the results, people had many similar experiences globally and felt that their lives and quality of life had been affected after they had been diagnosed with DMT2.

Bakgrund: Diabetes mellitus typ 2 (DMT2) är kronisk sjukdom som är en av de snabbast växande och vanligaste folksjukdomarna globalt. Behandling och egenvård av sjukdomen innebär flertalet livsstilsförändringar. Risken för fysisk och psykisk ohälsa är större för personer med DMT2. Livskvaliteten kan påverkas av kroniska sjukdomar. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att beskriva erfarenheter av att leva med DMT2. Metod: Litteraturstudie med kvalitativ ansats. Resultatet grundar sig på tio vetenskapliga artiklar som analyserades via tematisk analysmetod. Resultat: Tre huvudteman och sex subteman identifierades. Det första huvudtemat, Att hantera känslor inkluderade Rädsla av sjukdom samt Acceptans/normalisering av att leva med sjukdom som subteman. Andra huvudtemat, Att vara i behov av stöd inkluderade Familj och vänner samt Kunskap om sjukdom och egenvårdshantering som subteman. Det tredje huvudtemat, Att ställas inför livsstilsförändringar inkluderade Restriktioner: Kost och fysisk aktivitet samt Medicinering och blodsockerkontroller som subteman. Slutsats: Utifrån resultatet hade personer många liknande erfarenheter globalt och upplever att deras liv och livskvalitet har påverkats efter att de hade fått diagnosen DMT2.
