Nurses’ experiences of mentoring nurse students : A qualitative interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In nursing education there are clinical placements with the intention to integrate the student from the university to a professional life. A part of the nurse's role is to mentor nurse students. Mentors have an important role regarding how the student will experience their clinical placement. A mutual relationship is fundamental. Today there is a great shortage of experienced nurses. The environment within emergency medical services is often stressful and nurses must constantly adjust themselves, which can impact on patient-centered care and patient safety. Aim: The aim of this study is to illustrate nurses’ experiences of mentoring nurse students in emergency medical care. Method: The study is of qualitative semi-structured interviews with five respondents. The interviews were analysed through a qualitative content analysis. Result: The result analysis generated three categories regarding nurses' experiences. Gratifying, Stress and challenge and Relationship and mutuality. Conclusion: A will and motivation to mentor should exist. Even so, a mutual relationship between mentor and student. Emergency medical services are imbued by a lack of time and a stressful work environment which can risk patient safety. For good mentorship, open communication is required. The study can be applied on a larger scale to promote work of improvement.
