Experiences of self-care among patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Resultat: Tre huvudkategorier identifierades.

Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a well spread disease with a high global prevalence. The disease is associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and insufficient education. Common symptoms are increased thirst and fatigue. The main treatment is related to self-care and management of medication.

Aim: The aim is to describe how patients experience self-care with diabetes mellitus type 2.

Method: A literature review was conducted with an qualitative content analysis of 12 scientific result articles with qualitative approach of patients’ experiences of self-care with diabetes mellitus type 2.

Results: Three main categories were identified, patients experience of a new life situation, the support of the environment and patient's adherence to self-care. The result presents that external support from the environment and patient education was important to promote self-care.

Conclusion: Environmental support has a great significance and could contribute to acceptance, engagement and motivation towards good self-care. The nurse’s support needed to be patient centered and the relative's knowledge regarding the disease needed development.

Suggestions for further research: Education for relatives and person-centered care.

Clinical significance: Increase awareness among nurses to be able to promote self-care based on a person-centered approach.
