Nurses’ experiences of caring for patients at the end of life : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: End-of-life care takes place in various forms of care units such as hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, home health care and palliative units. Patients and relatives feel that good end-of-life care depends on the skills nurses possess.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe the nurse's experiences of caring for patients at the end of life.

Method: A literature study with Pilot and Beck's nine-step model has been used in this work. The articles are analysed with a qualitative content analysis.

Results: Two categories emerged. The first is ''Challenges in nursing work'' with four subcategories ''Handling difficult situations'', ''Working under pressure'', Experiencing a lack of confidence'' and ''Being an advocate for the patient''. The second is ''Profession as a resource'' with four subcategories ''To create one's own skills'', ''To develope relationships of trust'', To find one's own working strategies'' and ''The importance of collaborating with colleagues''.

Conclusions: The nurse had both challenging and empowering experiences of caring for patients at the end of life. Nurses felt that a lack of professional knowledge and skills made it difficult for them to understand the patient's needs at the end of life.
