Patients with HIV, experiences with health care : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus, HIV is a chronic disease that requires long-term contact with health care. Today's antiretroviral (ART) treatment has come a long way in terms of reduced spread of infection, pill burden and increased lifespan. Due to ART treatment's requirements for compliance and controls, it requires maintaining a good continuous relationship between the patient and the health care. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences that patients with HIV have in the encounter with health care. Method: A literature study based on 12 qualitative articles. Results: Five main categories were identified during the processing of the study material, which were stigmatizing attitudes, denied care, HIV knowledge, lack of confidentiality management and respectful treatment. Conclusion: Patients with HIV still today have negative experiences with healthcare staff in various areas of the world. There are positive experiences, but compared to the negative, they are much less rare. Lack of knowledge and stigma must not occur in the nurse's work, but instead promote health and relieve suffering. Keywords: Patient, experience, HIV, healthcare, nurse
