Patients’ experiences of being cared for with covid19 : A literature review on encounters in healthcare (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Covid-19 was discovered at the end of year 2019 and has resulted in a pandemic because of global spreading of the disease. Several patients have been cared for with covid-19 and the disease has created new challenges for the care of these patients. Knowledge about patients’ experiences of being cared for during the pandemic is needed to better accommodate patients' needs and increase the quality of care. Aim: The aim was to describe patients' experiences of being cared for with covid-19 in a somatic care unit or department. Method: A literature review based on 10 qualitative studies. Qualitative content analysis was used. Results: Two categories were identified: Being cared for with covid-19 and the importance of communication. Patients experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, abandonment and loneliness. Challenges and lack of communication occurred with health care workers and relatives. Conclusions: Good treatment and creativity in communication with nurses provided a better experience for patients. Relatives were an important support for patients and digital tools were a significant aid. Research into patients' experiences of being cared for with covid-19 is needed to increase understanding and improve patients care in similar situations in the future.
