Abstract [en]

Background: Pressure ulcers are a global problem with major consequences. The prevalence is high in all branches of healthcare, despite the fact that the ulcers are preventable. Nurses are in a good position to conduct pressure ulcer prevention, therefore the prevalence of pressure ulcers would decrease if more care was focused on preventing pressure ulcers.

Aim: The aim of the study was to highlight important factors for nurses that can facilitate the implementation of adequate pressure ulcer prevention and interventions to prevent the occurrence of pressure ulcers in all patient groups within healthcare.

Method: This study is a systematic literature review. To analyze the studies, an integrative content analysis was used.

Results: Eleven articles met the inclusion criteria for the study. Three categories were identified from these articles: Education, Assessments and Interventions. Nurses need to be educated to be able tocarry out the preventive work. Adequate communication and documentation as well as interprofessional work is required for a good outcome. Assessments are the basis for nursing planning with a personcentered focus, which is a central part of prevention.

Conclusions: Prevention with a good outcome requires educated personnel, a person-centered approach, planning, recurring assessments and adequate equipment. Documentation and communication are central parts of prevention. Interprofessional work is required to overcome obstacles in prevention.
