Adult patients’ experiences of bedside handover : A qualitative literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Handover at shift changes between nurses can be a risk factor for important information getting lost, which can pose a threat to patient safety. Bedside handover is a relatively new handover method, aiming to strengthen patient safety by making patients involved in the handover practice. In this way, the risk of miscommunication is reduced, while patients experience increased satisfaction with care.

Aim: The aim of this study was to highlight adult patients' experiences of bedside handover.

Method: A literature study of qualitative data from 11 original articles were analyzed using thematic analysis method according to Braun and Clarke.

Results: Two themes with three subthemes each were identified. The first theme was the importance of participation, where patients’ different needs of involvement were described and how information provided safety & security and an improved relationship with the nurse. The second theme was hindering factors where challenges in communication were described, together with preservation of integrity and room for improved routine & practice

Conclusions: Bedside handover increased patient participation and patient safety and is an important part of person-centered care. However, increased knowledge is needed for the handover method to achieve its full potential.
