Abstract [en]

Background: The maternal mortality ratio is higher in low-income countries than high-income countries. Most maternal deaths are preventable through high quality care and treatment of skilled health professionals. A quality improvement project guided by MIDWIZE Conceptual Framework was set at a maternity ward in Uganda and the project was led by capacitating maternity nurses, so-called MIDWIZE-ambassadors. Three evidence-based quality improvements were implemented: intrapartum support, dynamic positions during childbirth, and perineal protection.

Aim: To describe the maternity nurse’s experiences of participating in a quality improvement project at Naguru Hospital in Kampala, Uganda as MIDWIZE-ambassadors.

Method: A qualitative interview design was used with an inductive approach. Seven MIDWIZE- ambassadors were interviewed, and the collected data was analyzed by Braun and Clarks (2006) thematic analysis.

Result: Three main themes were identified: becoming a MIDWIZE-ambassador, enhanced care approaches practiced at the maternity ward and responsibility of advocating for sustainability.

Conclusion: The MIDWIZE-ambassadors experienced a professional development at the maternity ward and improvement in maternal health when participating in a quality improvement project guided by the MIDWIZE Conceptual Framework. More research is needed to investigate how to ensure sustainability of the outcomes of the project.
