Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Diabetes typ 1, erfarenheter, ungdomar, egenvård, utmaningar

Abstract [en]

Background: Type 1 diabetes is increasing globally, resulting in more individuals living with the health challenges associated with type 1 diabetes. The chronic autoimmune disease typically manifests at a young age, posing additional challenges for young adults. Therefore, this study aims to describe adolescents' experiences regarding self-care of type 1 diabetes during the transition from childhood to adulthood.

Aim: The purpose of the study is to describe adolescents' experiences of self-care in type 1 diabetes.

Method: The study is a literature review designed following Polit and Beck's nine-step model. Eleven original articles were analyzed using Graneheim and Lundman's qualitative content analysis.

Results: The results revealed three distinct categories: challenges with type 1 diabetes, desire for increased independence, and varying meanings of support. Additionally, eight subcategories were identified.

Conclusion: The study has identified a deficiency in self-care among adolescents with type 1 diabetes. There is a lack of understanding of the unique life situation of adolescents, which underscores the need for further investigation of this target group to promote self-care and avoid neglecting the support they need.
