Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Palliative care seeks to prevent and relieve suffering for the terminal patient. It is not only about easing the physical pain, but also to sooth the mental distress of the patient. By initiating and developing a caring relationship with the patient, the carer can help the patient in reaching the best possible quality of life throughout the time he or she has left. This can be a very difficult task, and may be a testing time for all parties involved. The aim of this study was to describe how the caring relationship becomes visible in the care of terminally ill patients. In order to describe the care, a five step analysis of qualitative articles was done. The results identified seven categories; target based care, holistic perspective, trust, guidance, knowledge and experience, honesty and communication, and cooperation. After completingthe analysis, an overall theme was created; interaction. The palliative care emerges through the interaction between carer, patient and relatives. The seven categories are entwined within the interaction.
