Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in Sweden. The disease is potentially life threatening and the couple may face traumatic crisis. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy and hormone therapy, of which side effects are common. The purpose of this study was to describe experiences of couples living with prostate cancer. The study is a literature review based on eight qualitative articles. In the result, seven themes emerged. News of cancer; In many cases, the diagnosis caused a chock. Normalisation; Many couples aimed at carrying on life as before diagnosis. Information; Access to relevant information was considered essential. Communicating feelings; Intra-couple communication was essential. Effect on relationship; In many cases, diagnosis caused reevaluation of the relationship. Support; The ability of partners to support each other had great impact on coping during disease and treatment. Sexuality and identity; The couples perceived a change in gender identity. The results show that information is very important to men with prostate cancer and their partners. The couples communicating openly experience lower levels of distress and have increased probability of maintaining good relationships. The nurse has an important role in supporting couples in these processes.
