Bakgrund: För att åstadkomma patientsäker vård krävs det att sjuksköterskor och läkare kommunicerar frekvent, arbetar efter gemensamma mål och värderar varandras kunskap. Syfte: Syftet med studien är att undersöka intensivvårdssjuksköterskors upplevelser och erfarenheter av patientrelaterad kommunikation med läkare. Metod: Detta är en empirisk studie med kvalitativ ansats. Datainsamlingen skedde med semistrukturerade fokusgruppsintervjuer. Resultat: Sjuksköterskorna ansåg att stress, hierarkier och olika förväntningar på den andre professionens arbetsuppgifter bidrog till försämrad kommunikation med läkarna. De ansåg att förmågan att kommunicera förbättrades med längre yrkeserfarenhet. Öppet klimat på avdelningen, nära samarbete och gemensamma mål att arbeta efter var andra faktorer som ansågs påverka kommunikationen positivt. Sjuksköterskorna var överens om att hjälpmedel för kommunikation såsom SBAR skulle kunna förbättra kommunikationen. Slutsats: Samarbetet med läkarna uppfattades mestadels som roligt och utvecklande. Sjuksköterskorna var överens om att bristande kommunikation kunde påverka patienternas behandling negativt. De ansåg att de själva hade ett stort ansvar för att se till att kommunikationen fungerade optimalt.

Background: To accomplish patient safety it is a necessity that nurses and physicians communicate frequently; work towards common goals; and value each other’s knowledge. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine intensive care nurses’ perceptions and experiences of patient related communication with physicians. Method: This is an empirical study based on a qualitative approach. The method of gathering data was by using semi-structured interviews of focus groups. Result: The nurses considered that stress, hierarchy, and different expectations on each other’s work tasks contributed to a worsened communication with physicians. They regarded that the larger the experience is, the more the skill of communication improves. Other perceived factors affecting the communication in a positive way were an open-minded environment at the wards, close cooperation, and working towards common goals. The nurses agreed that tools for communication, such as SBAR, would possibly improve the effectiveness of the communication. Conclusion: The cooperation with physicians was perceived as generally appreciated and rewarding. The nurses agreed that lack in communication could have a negative effect on the treatment of patients. They regarded that they themselves had a large responsibility for achieving the most beneficial form of communication.
