The intensive care nurse experiences of communication with awake patients treated with mechanical ventilation (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In intensive care the majority of the patients are treated with mechanical ventilation, which implies difficulties in the ability to communicate because the inability to express themselves verbally. This has been shown to lead to feelings of anxiety and frustration of the patient but also frustration among the nurses who have difficulties understanding what the patient wants to express. The care of awake patients with mechanical ventilation can also be perceived by the nurse as difficult and demanding when the patients can be anxious and agitated. The purpose of this study was to describe nurses experiences of communication with awake patients treated with mechanical ventilation. The study is empirical with a qualitative approach. Six interviews were conducted and analysed based on a qualitative content analysis. The analysis resulted in four main categories which were following: strategies, difficulties, communication topics and nurses perceptions of the patients experiences. By highlighting the communication with awake respiratory care patients in intensive care it is required to increase awareness of the opportunities a good communication can lead to for the patient as well as the intensive care nurse.
