Ett återupplivningsförsök kan orsaka moralisk stress hos sjuksköterskan med känslor av maktlöshet, frustration, ilska och missnöjdhet. Att ha närstående närvarande vid återupplivningsförsök är fortfarande kontroversiellt. Intensivvårdssjuksköterskan spelar en viktig roll och ska balansera mellan patienten, de närstående och personalens olika behov. Det är viktigt för sjuksköterskan att få stöd av sina kollegor efter ett återupplivningsförsök. Syftet med studien är att beskriva intensivvårdssjuksköterskors upplevelser av att medverka vid återupplivningsförsök. En kvalitativ ansats valdes eftersom författarna önskade få förståelse för sjuksköterskornas upplevelser. Resultat visade att sjuksköterskornas upplevelser av återupplivningsförsök påverkas dels av inre och yttre faktorer. Inre faktorer handlar om svårigheter att hantera unga patienter som drabbas av hjärtstopp, specifika fall man minns samt att man upplever återupplivningsförsöket mer traumatiskt om man är oförberedd. Yttre faktorer som påverkade sjuksköterskornas upplevelser handlade om känsla av kaos, att förlora kontroll över situationen samt behov av att skapa överblick.

A resuscitation-attempt can cause moral distress for the nurse, with feelings of powerlessness, frustration, anger and discontent. Having family members present during CPR is still a controversial matter. The ICU-nurse plays an important role by balancing the patients’ needs, the family members’ needs and the needs of the staff. It is important for the nurse to receive support from other colleagues after a resuscitation-attempt. The aim of this study is to describe ICU-nurses’ experiences of assisting in resuscitation-attempts. A qualitative approach was taken as the authors wished to achieve an understanding of the nature of the nurses’ experiences. The result showed that the nurses’ experiences of resuscitation-attempts were affected by internal and external factors. The internal factors consisted of difficulties in managing young patients suffering from cardiac arrest, specific cases that were hard to forget and the sense of the resuscitation-attempt being more traumatic if the nurses were unprepared. External factors that affected the nurses’ experiences consisted of feelings of chaos, loss of control and a need to create an overview of the situation.
