Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The number of individuals suffering from obesity is increasing significantly in Sweden and the world. There is a risk of obesity-related morbidities, such as hypertension, diabetes type II, stroke, heart failure and obstructive sleep apnea. The psychological stress in this group is also noticeable. Surgical procedure is becoming the more common treatment since it tends to be very successful from a physiological point of view. The psychological effects, however, are less explored. Aim: To investigate individuals’ experiences of life after a gastric bypass surgery. Method: The study is empirical with an inductive and qualitative approach. The study was performed on blogs written by individuals who had been through a gastric bypass surgery. Results: Nine blogs, written by different individuals, were analyzed. This gave four themes: Positive experiences after surgery, negative experiences after surgery, social life and adaptation after surgery and nine categories: To be well-being, the good progress, uncertainty, loss of control, discomfort, relationships, affirmation, the change and processing Conclusion: It has been shown, that individuals experience many benefits after surgery. There are, however, also situations that are seen as troublesome. All individuals describe an overall better well-being and an improved self-confidence in life after surgery.
