Specialist nurses experience of SBAR as a reporting tool (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: During handovers one-way communication is often used meaning that the information comes from one person. Deficient communication in health care today is a big contributing factor to misinterpretation, misunderstanding and loss of information. SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) is a tool that helps make the information transfer more secure and structured during handovers. Objective: The objective of this study was to find out how specialist nurses at an Intensive Care Unit experienced SBAR as a communications tool during handovers. Method: An empirical interview study with qualitative approach was used in this study. Five specialist nurses working in an Intensive Care Unit were interviewed. Results: The results are presented from the different points (a-e) and showed that all participants felt that they used SBAR during handovers. SBAR was described as an easy tool to work with as well as a positive structure to use under the handover. To use SBAR insured that all vital information about the patient was included in the reports and the recipient knew in what order the information would be presented. A disadvantage with SBAR was the difficulty of implementing the tool completely within the workgroup. Conclusion: A structured report during hand over is important and SBAR is perceived as an easy tool to work with and presents the wanted structure. There are difficulties to implement the tool fully within the staff. Clinical relevance: Further resource to implement the tool SBAR fully within the staff is needed.
