Experiences of coercive measures in adult patientsin psychiatric inpatient care : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Elva vetenskapliga artiklar ingick i studien.

Abstract [en]

Background: Individuals who are under coercive care may be subjected to coercive measures in some cases which are legally organized. Exposure to such situations is an exception to the principle of autonomy, which can raise ethical concerns among the carers involved. Specialist nurse's role is, among other things, to work on the basis of the six core competencies while respecting human rights with regard to ethical aspects.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of coercive measures among adults in psychiatric inpatient care.

Method: The study was conducted as a literature study with a thematic analysis method. Eleven scientific articles were included in the study. The individual steps of the implementation were described using a nine-step model.

Result: In conducting and analyzing the study, the following emerged: The first main theme: Emotionalreactions, with positive and negative experiences. The second main theme: Care context with thesub-themes: Communication, Need for support and nursing care, Power relationship and staff attitudes, Staff-patient relationship and Care environment.

Conclusion: People describe coercive measures mostly as negative. The environment, communication and relationship with care staff determine how a person perceives a coercive measure. Other alternatives to these measures are requested.
