Nurses’ nursing interventions to prevent and reduce venous access-related infections : A Literature Review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Contemporary healthcare administers intravenous treatments such as nutrition and antibiotics, necessitating access to the patient's bloodstream via a venous access device. Various types, including central venous catheters (CVC), peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC-lines), and peripheral venous catheters (PVCs), are routinely utilized. It is the registered nurse’s responsibility to ensure these devices are managed correctly and in accordance with patient safety standards, as there is a significant risk of healthcare-associated infections.

Aim: The aim was to investigate factors related to nursing interventions that can prevent or reduce venous access-related infections.

Method: A general literature review with a structured and systematic approach was conducted, including 17 quantitative original articles. The methodological steps were described according to Polit and Beck’s (2021) nine-step literature review process. The analysis was carried out in accordance with the three-step model by Popenoe et al. (2021).

Results: Seventeen quantitative original articles were analyzed, and three themes were identified: the importance of competence, nursing priorities, and proper hygiene. The results were presented in a synthesized text and reinforced with specific findings that were reported in the article matrix as a complement.

Conclusion: Various factors appear to contribute to the reduction of venous access-related infections. The specialist nurse should be responsible for ongoing education to ensure that evidence-based care is maintained. Further research is recommended to compare care bundles with individual interventions to determine which is most effective.
