Patients' experiences of physical activity in mental illness : A structured literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness is a growing public health problem that affects people of all ages worldwide. Physical activity is used as an alternative or complement to traditional treatment and contributes to improved mental health. Specialist nurses need to understand patients' experiences, identify needs and motivate them to make health-promoting lifestyle changes.

Aim: Highlight patients' experiences of physical activity in mental illness.

Method: Qualitative structured literature study with inductive approach and thematic analysis.

Result: The literature study revealed three main themes with nine subthemes. The first theme “Positive experiences can increase motivation for physical activity” presented subthemes of increased well-being and quality of life, participation in a social context, structure in everyday life and bodily experiences. The second theme “Internal and external conditions can facilitate participation in physical activity” with the following subthemes security and inclusion in training environments, individually adapted support and internal motivation. Finally, the third theme “Obstructive factors can make physical activity more difficult” with the following subthemes lack of belief in oneself and one's capacity and barriers in relation to diagnosis and treatment.

Conclusion: When treating mental health conditions, it is important to take into account the patient's individual circumstances when introducing physical activity as a treatment method. Specialist nurses have a role in promoting physical activity and supporting self-care in their encounters with patients. However, there are obstacles such as lack of knowledge, organizational limitations and low patient motivation that make implementation difficult for specialist nurses.
