End-of-life care – Patients with cancer’s experience of palliative care : A general literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Cancersjukdom kräver ofta palliativ vård i livets slutskede.

Abstract [en]

Background: Cancer is a global public health disease and is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Cancer often requires palliative care in the final stages of life. The patient's experience of palliative care is central to promoting well-being and quality of life during this critical phase.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the experience of palliative care in patients with cancer in the final stages of life.

Method: A general literature study with a qualitative and inductive approach was conducted. Eleven scientific articles were analyzed using thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke.

Results: Based on the eleven outcome articles, two main themes were identified: Coexistence with an incurable illness and The importance of supportive relationships, with a total of six associated subthemes.

Conclusion: Creating care relationships that focus on the patient's dignity and autonomy gives rise to the promotion of quality of life for the patient in palliative care. Future research on concrete measures to increase participation, reduce loneliness, and improve the care relationship may result in continued promotion of quality of life in patients in the final stages of life.
