People with voice hallucinations and their experiences of participating in voice hearing groups : A structured literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Hearing voices can be a source of great suffering. Since pharmacological treatment is often inadequate, there is a need for alternative methods to manage auditory verbal hallucinations.

Aim: The aim of this paper was to describe how people with auditory verbal hallucinations experience participation in Hearing voices groups.

Method: The paper is a structured literature review with a thematic analysis of qualitative scientific articles.

Results: The fourteen selected articles were analysed according to Bettany-Saltikov and McSherry's (2024) model for data analysis. The data analysis generated four different themes: Experiences of dealing with voices, Belonging and shared experiences, The group as a safe place and A pronounced non-judgmental and accepting environment. The results showed that the participants described Hearing voices groups as a place where they could speak openly and share experiences.

Conclusion: People who participated in Hearing voices groups experienced that the groups were supportive and helpful. The participants described experiences of community, openness and security, among other things. Since there seems to be a lack of studies on voice-hearing groups in Sweden, this is a suggestion for continued research on the subject.
