Abstract [en]

Background: Malaria is a major public health problem in Uganda. This study highlights nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with malaria, and how the key concepts of person-centred care, care relationships, and health are integrated into nursing practice. By understanding nurses’ perspectives, important insights can be gained into how person-centred approaches can be strengthened in both treatment and prevention.

Aim:The aim was to describe nurses’ experiences of caring for malaria patients in Uganda.

Method: A qualitative design was used, employing semi-structured telephone interviews with nurses working in public healthcare facilities. Data were analysed using manifest qualitative content analysis.

Results: Nurses experienced malaria care as an individualised and relationship-based process that requires clinical competence to restore health through empathy, communication, and cultural understanding. Person-centred care was expressed through active listening, adapting to patients’ needs, and building trust through education. Shortages of medication, geographical inequalities, and limited community awareness were identified as key challenges.

Conclusion:Malaria care in Uganda is relational and context dependent. Improved health outcomes require strategies that integrate clinical effectiveness, cultural understanding, community engagement, and supportive healthcare systems.

Bakgrund: Malaria utgör ett fortsatt allvarligt folkhälsoproblem i Uganda. Studien belyser sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda patienter med malaria, med särskilt fokus på hur begreppen personcentrerad vård, vårdrelationer och hälsa integreras i omvårdnadspraktiken. Genom att synliggöra sjuksköterskornas perspektiv skapas en djupare förståelse för hur personcentrerade arbetssätt kan stärkas inom både behandling och förebyggande insatser.

Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda patienter med malaria i Uganda.

Metod: En kvalitativ forskningsansats användes. Semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes med sjuksköterskor verksamma vid offentliga vårdinrättningar, och materialet analyserades med manifest kvalitativ innehållsanalys.

Resultat: Sjuksköterskor beskrev malariavård som en individuell och relationell process som kräver klinisk kompetens, empati, kommunikation och kulturell förståelse. Personcentrerad vård uttrycktes genom aktivt lyssnande, anpassning till patientens medicinska och sociala behov samt tillitsbyggande genom utbildning och samarbete. Identifierade hinder omfattade läkemedelsbrist, geografiska skillnader och begränsad samhällsmedvetenhet.

Slutsats: Malariavård i Uganda präglas av relationellt och kontextuellt arbete. För att förbättra vårdens resultat krävs integrerade strategier som förenar klinisk skicklighet med kulturell förståelse, samhällsengagemang och ett stödjande vårdsystem.
