Caring under fire : The civil and military nurses’ experiences of working during armed conflict (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In a world constantly affected by armed conflicts, the presence of nurses will always be essential. The primary duty of the nurse is to save lives and alleviate suffering, a task that becomes particularly challenging when humanitarian law is not upheld. Nursing care is a central aspect of the nurse´s work, and within the context of war, one must be prepared to face any situation and act under extreme conditions.

Aim: The aim of this study is to highlight the experiences of civilian and military nurses working in armed conflict settings.

Method: An integrative literature review with a qualitative approach was conducted. Nine scientific articles were analyzed using thematic analysis.

Results: Three main themes were identified: preparation, challenges, and personal development. Nurses working in armed conflicts face extreme situations and witness events that are difficult to imagine for those who have never worked in such environments. Preparation, clinical competence, and the ability to adapt quickly were found to be crucial prerequisites for providing effective and safe care.

Conclusion: With adequate education, relevant experience, and the opportunity to learn from others´ stories from similar situations, nurses can prepare themselves in the best possible way for work in conflict zones. Flexibility, teamwork, and strong professional commitment are key factors in managing the challenges that arise. Although the work is described as demanding and emotionally taxing, it also contributes to significant personal and professional growth.
