Nurses’ Experiences of Play in the Nursing Care of Children : A Literature Review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Common to children cared for in hospitals is the uncertainty and unfamiliarity of the hospital environment, which is often perceived as frightening. In paediatric healthcare, play has been implemented in nursing care and shown to be effective in reducing stress and increasing the safety of children in hospital environment. Nurses have a central responsibility in the care of children and can use play as a tool to promote a holistic view and understanding of the child´s needs.Aim: To describe nurses’ experiences of play as a complement to the care of children.Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach, where the analysis was carried out using content analysis. Results: Four subcategories were identified: Creating a care relationship through play, managing organizational factors when implementing play, giving the child opportunity to “be a child” through play, involving the child in the care situation through play. From the subcategories, two categories emerged: Play as a complement to the care relationship, a sense of creating participation though play. Conclusion: Play is of great importance in the work of nurses as a valuable tool. However, lack of resources shows a limited use of play. The study emphasizes the need for further research to expand knowledge in play and develop nursing for children, which in turn can improve the care environment.
