Nurses’ experiences on caring for patients whosuffered a physical trauma : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Today trauma is one of the leading causes of death across the globe. Nurses have an obligation and a responsibility to perform individual based and a patient near care. However, patients do witness that there is a lack of nursing in the trauma care.

Aim: To describe nurses´ experiences of caring for patients who suffered a physical trauma.Method: A literature review with a descriptive design. The results of the study were formed due tosystematic searches in accordance with Polit and Beck´s nine-step model. The scientific articles were analyzed in accordance with Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis.

Results: Nurses´ experiences several challenges with caring for patients who suffered a physicaltrauma. Two themes were identified, where each theme resulted in two subthemes. The different themes that were identified were workload and competence. The theme of workload resulted in the subthemes lack of time and emotional stress, and from the theme competence the subthemes need for education and professional years as a nurse

Conclusion: To care for patients who suffered a physical trauma is challenging even for the most experienced nurse. However, areas of improvement have been identified and with more research within the subject nurse’s challenges with caring for physical trauma patients can reduce. This will result in a healthier approach for nurses in the caring for physical trauma patients which will result in a better and more sustainable care for care practitioners as well as for care receivers.
