Patients’ Experiences of Nurse–PatientEncounters in Breast Cancer Care : A Literature Review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

 ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and poses significant physical, psychological, and social challenges. Nurses play a crucial role in providing information, emotional support, and creating a sense of security throughout the care process. The aim of this literature review was to describe how individuals with breast cancer experience their encounters with nurses. A general literature review with an inductive approach was conducted. Eleven qualitative original studies were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Two themes are generated: Being seen through communication and Being held together through the nurse–patient relationship. These themes highlight the importance of dialogue, empathy, continuity, and individualized support.Patients emphasized that the nurse’s presence and expertise not only provided practical guidance but also alleviated suffering and strengthened their sense of control and participation in care. Nurses constitute a key resource in breast cancer care by combining clinical expertise with empathy and person-centered care. Such an approach enhances patient empowerment, promotes security, and improves quality of life.
