Nurses experience caring for patients with advanced cancer in the end-of-life stage : A literature review (English)
Abstract [en]
Background: Advanced cancer is a term used when the disease is unlikely to be cured. The patient receives end of life care, which focuses on reliving suffering. Through the four cornerstones of palliative care, which include symptom relief, teamwork, effective communication, and support for relatives, the nurse can work in a structured manner to provide high quality nursing care.Aim: The aim of this study is to highlight nurses` experience of caring for patients with advanced cancer at the end of life. Method: This study is a general literature review with a qualitative approach. The study is based on ten different scientific articles taken from the different databases CINAHL and PubMed. The analysis was conducted using thematic analysis. Results: The analysis was presented with two themes: Emotional challenges, security-building communication, and five subthemes: the feeling of inadequacy, development of professional confidence, security in patient interaction, emotional strain in patient interaction, acceptance by relatives. Conclusion: Nurses who care for patients with advanced cancer at the end-of-life experience ethical stress and feeling of inadequacy. Providing good care requires communication and understanding from colleagues as well as from patients and relatives. Keywords: Nurse, experiences, advanced cancer, end of life.
