Bakgrund: Pediatrisk vård i livets slutskede syftar till minskat lidande för både barnet och familjen. Familjen är väsentlig för barnet varav sjuksköterskor har en central roll i att tillämpa familjecentrerad vård för att möta deras behov. Tillgången till pediatrisk vård i livets slutskede är dock begränsad och uppskattningsvis är 21 miljoner barn världen över i behov av det.  

Syfte: Att belysa sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda barn i livets slutskede i samspel med barnets familj. 

Metod: En allmän litteraturstudie med kvalitativ ansats där Polit och Becks niostegsmodell använts som studiedesign. Elva originalartiklar har inkluderats och analyserats utifrån Braun och Clarkes tematiska analys.

Resultat: Två teman och fem subteman framkom; Erfarenhetens betydelse inom professionen med subtema att känna osäkerhet inom kompetensområdet, att känna medlidande samt att behöva organisatoriskt stöd. Det andra temat utvecklades till Familjecentrerad omvårdnad i en pressad vårdmiljö med subtema att främja vårdrelationen och att vårda med bristande resurser.  

Slutsatser: Pediatrisk vård i livets slutskede innebär stora utmaningar för sjuksköterskor. För att ge sjuksköterskor bättre förutsättningar krävs utbildning, kompetensutveckling och emotionellt stöd. Ytterligare forskning behövs för ökad kunskap om och tillgång till adekvat pediatrisk vård i livets slutskede.

Background: Pediatric end-of-life care aims to reduce suffering for both children and families. The family is essential to the child and nurses have a central role in implementing family-centered care to meet their needs. However, access to pediatric end-of-life care is limited, with an estimated 21 million children worldwide in need.

Aim: To illuminate nurses’ experiences of giving end-of-life care to children in interaction with the child’s family.

Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach using Polit and Beck’s nine-step model as a design. Eleven original articles were included and analyzed with Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis.  

Results: Two themes and five subthemes emerged; The importance of experience in the profession with the subthemes of uncertainty within the area of ​​competence, experiencing compassion and a need for organizational support. The other theme was Family-centered nursing in a pressured healthcare environment with the subthemes of promoting the care relationship and caring with insufficient resources.

Conclusion: Pediatric end-of-life care presents major challenges for nurses and to provide them with better opportunities these factors are required: education, professional development and emotional support. Therefore, further research is needed to increase knowledge and access to adequate pediatric end-of-life care.
