Women’s experiences of care for postpartum depression : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Postpartum depression is a form of depression that affects 13–19 % of women globally and can lead to extensive suffering. Many women risk not being recognized by the healthcare system and those who seek help describe different experiences of care. It is the responsibility of healthcare professionals to provide solid care. Increased knowledge about women's needs and experiences of care can improve nursing work.

Purpose: To describe women's experiences of care for postpartum depression.

Method: General literature study with a qualitative approach was conducted including ten scientific articles from the databases CINAHL, PubMed and PsycINFO.

Results: Two themes were identified: the importance of the care relationship and fragmented care. Four subthemes were identified: meaningful support from healthcare professionals, perceived lack of participation and meaningful communication, insufficient information and guidance, and lack of continuity of care.

Conclusions: Women with postpartum depression experience that support and meaningful communication from healthcare professionals eases their suffering. Experiences of a lack of meaningful communication and continuity make it more difficult to feel well and lead to a poorer care experience. Person-centered nursing where women's feelings and experiences are taken seriously is crucial to promoting mental health. Further research should focus on the organization and structure of care, which can improve women's health and identify women suffering from postpartum depression earlier.
