Nurses’ knowledge and experiences in identifying children exposed to domestic violence (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Children living in homes where violence occurs are at risk of serious consequences for their mental and physical health. Healthcare services play an important role in identifying children at risk. Nurses hold a key position, but the responsibility is perceived as complex and emotionally demanding, especially when signs are difficult to interpret or when reporting concerns may affect the relationship with the family. Aim: To describe nurses’ knowledge and experiences of identifying children exposed to domestic violence. Method: A general literature review was conducted according to Polit and Beck’s nine-step process. Ten qualitative, peer-reviewed articles published between 2016 and 2026 were identified in CINAHL and PubMed. The material was analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke. Results: Two main themes emerged with associated subthemes. Nurses experienced standing alone in the interpretative process, related to limited knowledge of routines, reporting procedures, and signs and symptoms. Organizational factors such as time constraints and high workload further hindered their work. The second theme, balancing care and responsibility, highlighted how the relationship between nurses, children, and families is perceived as both a resource and a challenge, potentially leading to emotional burden and ethical dilemmas in the reporting process. Conclusion: Identification is influenced by knowledge, experience, organizational support, and relational factors. Clear guidelines and continuous education are essential. Keywords: Child abuse, experiences, identification, nursing, nurses, domestic violence.
