Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects adult patients’ daily life, relationships, functional ability-and mental health. The specialist nurse plays a central role in this patient group by following up nursing interventions and planning care in patients’ everyday lives based on a person-centred approach. However, knowledge of how adult patients with ADHD experience healthcare interventions remains limited.

For adults, it can make everyday life difficult — managing relationships, keeping up at work, staying on top of mental health- and getting through the day can all feel like a constant battle. Specialist nurses play a big part in helping these patients, not just by following up on treatment but by getting to know the person behind the diagnosis and building care around their real life

Aim: The aim of this literature review is to illuminate adult patients’ experiences of interventions for ADHD.

Method: The study is conducted as a qualitative literature review based on systematic searches in the CINAHL and PubMed databases, guided by the PEO-T model. Scientific- peer-reviewed original articles published between 2015 and 2025 are included. The selection process involved title screening, abstract review, and full-textanalysis according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis to illuminate adult patients’ experiences of interventions for ADHD.

Results: The results were based on nine qualitative studies involving adult patients with ADHD and identified three main themes: relationship, information and intervention in ADHD care; interventions that promote a sense of belonging; and structure and long-term change in ADHD.

Conclusion: Interventions for adults with ADHD need to focus on supportive relationships, clear communication, structured care, and continuous follow-up of treatment. Further research is needed to develop nursing interventions that better meet patients’ needs within psychiatric care. This study contributes with synthesized knowledge that may strengthen nurses’ ability to provide person-centered and ethically grounded care throughout the nursing process. By increasing the understanding of the patients’ experiences, healthcare services can improve treatment strategies and provide appropriate support and care.

Bakgrund: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) är en neuropsykiatrisk funktionsnedsättning som påverkar vuxna patienters vardag, relationer, funktionsförmåga samt kan påverka den psykisk hälsan. En specialistsjuksköterska har en central roll i denna patientgrupp genom att följa upp omvårdnadsinsatser och planera vårdinsatser i patientens vardag utifrån ett personcentrerat förhållningssätt. Kunskapen om hur vuxna patienter med ADHD upplever interventioner inom vården är dock begränsad. 

Syfte: Syftet med denna litteraturstudie är att belysa vuxna patienters upplevelser av interventioner vid ADHD.

Metod: En kvalitativ litteraturstudie genomfördes med stöd av databaserna CINAHL och PubMed samt utgick utifrån PEOT-modellen. Vetenskapliga, originalartiklar publicerade mellan 2015-2025 inkluderat samt peer review. Urvalet genomfördes med stöd av titelgranskning, abstrakt och fulltext utifrån inklusion och exklusionskriterier. Data analyserades med tematisk analys för att belysa vuxna patienters upplevelser av interventioner vid ADHD. 

Resultat: Baseras på nio kvalitativa artiklar om vuxna patienter med ADHD. Resultatet visade tre huvudteman: Relation, information och intervention i ADHD-vård, Insatser som främjar tillhörighet vid ADHD och struktur och långsiktig förändring vid ADHD.

Slutsats: Interventioner för vuxna med ADHD behöver fokus på relation, tydlig struktur och kommunikation samt uppföljning av behandling. Fortsatt forskning bör utvecklas med bättre omvårdnadsinsatser för att främja och uppnå patientens behov inom psykiatrisk vård. Studien bidrar med samlad kunskap som kan stärka sjuksköterskans möjligheter att erbjuda patienten en personcentrerad vård och etiskt grundad omvårdnad under omvårdnadsprocessen. Genom att bidra till ökad förståelse för patienters erfarenheter och upplevelser kan vården förbättra olika behandlingsstrategier, erbjuda adekvat stöd och behandling.
