Nurses’ experiences of caring for stroke patients during the rehabilitation phase : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Sju originalartiklar ingick i resultatet som söktes fram i databaserna Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health [CINAHL] och Public Medline [PubMed].

Abstract [en]

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability. Depending on the location and extent of the damage, the person can expect impairment in motor, sensory and cognitive functions. In the event of a stroke, rehabilitation begins early and must take place as soon as the patient feels the need. Nurse’s commitment can contribute of promoting the physical but also the mental health of patients.

Aim: The purpose of this literature study was to explore nurses’ experiences of supporting stroke patients during the rehabilitation phase.

Method: A general literature study was carried out in analogy with Polit & Beck’s nine-step model. With the support of Graneheim & Lundman the content analysis was carried out. Seven original articles were included in the results that were searched in the databases Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health [CINAHL] och Public Medline [PubMed].

Results: categories were identified: promote the quality of life and meaningfulness and obstacle.

Conclusions: Nurses promote quality of life in the care of strokepatients through person-centered care, collaboration, and support for independence. Despite challenges and obstacles, their overall view and individual adaptation are crucial for a successful rehabilitation.
