Bakgrund: Vårdbehovet för patienter med cancer vid livets slutskede är komplext, särskilt med en åldrande befolkning och fler kroniska sjukdomar. Vårdformen innefattar komplexa symtomlindring och helhetssyn på patientens fysiska, psykiska och emotionella välmående. Sjuksköterskans huvudsakliga arbetsområden består av omvårdnad där kompetens, samarbete, kommunikation och stöd är avgörande för att patienten och deras närstående ska få en värdig vård inom livets slut. 

Syfte: Att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda vuxna patienter som lider av cancer vid livets slutskede inom hälso-och sjukvården.

Metod: En allmän litteraturstudie med kvalitativ ansats av vetenskapliga artiklar valdes. Artiklarna som inkluderades i studie var från CINAHL och PubMed. En tematisk innehållsanalys användes för att analysera data.

Resultat: Två teman identifierades: “Människan i centrum” och “En högre dimension inom professionen”. Fyra underteman identifierades: “Att kunna främja patientsäker vård”, “Att möta patientens behov”, “Att vara professionell vid arbete nära döden” och “Att skapa trygghet i kommunikationen”.

Slutsats: Denna litteraturstudie utforskar sjuksköterskornas erfarenheter av att vårda patienter med cancer vid livets slutskede. Sjuksköterskorna upplevde otrygghet, osäkerhet och maktlöshet, samt bristande kommunikation mellan patient, sjuksköterska och kollegor ledde till förlorat förtroende och sämre patientsäkerhet. Genom att erbjuda utbildning och öka stärka kollegialt stöd upplevde sjuksköterskorna ett förbättrat självförtroende och trygghet i sitt yrke.

Background: The care needs of patients with cancer at the end of life are complex, especially with an aging population and multiple chronic diseases. The form of care includes complex symptom relief and a holistic view of the patient's physical, mental and emotional well-being. The nurse's main areas of work consist of nursing where competence, collaboration, communication and support are crucial for the patient and their loved ones to receive dignified care at the end of life. 

Aim: To describe nurses' experiences of caring for adult patients suffering from cancer at the end-of-life care in a hospital setting.

Method: A general literature review with a qualitative approach of ten scientific articles was chosen. The articles included in the study were from CINAHL and PubMed. A thematic content analysis was used to analyze the data.

Results: Two themes were identified: “People at the center” and “A higher dimension within the profession”. Four sub-themes were identified: “To be able to promote patient-safe care”, “To meet the patient's needs”, “To be professional in working near death” and “To create safety in communication”.

Conclusion: This literature study explores nurses' experiences of caring for patients with cancer at the end of life. The nurses experienced insecurity, uncertainty and powerlessness, as well as lack of communication between patient, nurse and colleagues, leading to lost trust and poorer patient safety. By offering training and increasing peer support, the nurses experienced improved self-confidence and security in their profession.
