The nurse's experiences of caring during the coronavirus pandemic : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Covid-19 is a virus that spread globally in the winter of 2019 and had major consequences, with many people became ill and died. The high number of patients needing care placed a major burden on hospitals, and not least on the healthcare staff who cared for the patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the nurse's experiences of caring for patients with Covid-19 in inpatient care during the corona pandemic.

Method: A literature review based on ten qualitative scientific articles, the analysis was conducted using thematic content analysis.

Results: Three themes were identified: Ethical and moral stress, Organizational challenges and work environment and Professional development. Within Organizational challenges and work environment, two subthemes emerged: A changed workplace and Structural barriers. The theme Professional development included two subthemes: Professional pride and identity and Solidarity and community.

Conclusion: This study shows that nurses bore a great responsibility during the corona pandemic. Their experiences reflect strong feelings of inadequacy and fear. Despite poor working conditions and a changed work environment, they did their utmost to promote patients’ health and well-being. This has resulted in considerable stress, affecting their mental and physical well-being.
