Nurses’ patient experience of caring formigrants : A general literature review describing migrants in Europe (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Refugee flows followed by global crisis situations have causedincreased migration. Care needs have since increased greatly in Europe, which hascaused great strain in care. People with a migrant background include theundocumented, asylum seekers, refugees and irregular migrants. Patients with amigrant background are a group of patients who encounter complex obstacles whenmeeting with healthcare professionals. Aim: The aim was to describe nurses experiences of caring for migrants. Method: Qualitative literature study based on analysis of previous research. Theresults have been interpreted based on thematic analysis. Results: Nurses experience several challenges in the care encounter with patientswith a migrant background. Three main themes emerged: Communication barrierswhich include barriers in understanding and limited access to information. Ethicaldilemmas involving moral and legal challenges, as well as cultural differences.Systematic obstacles such as lack of resources and lack of competence. Conclusion: The study shows that deficiencies in communication and understandingaffect patients health and experience negatively, as well as affect patient safety.These challenges also make patient participation difficult. To promote equal care,clearer guidelines, increased cultural competence and better access to interpretingservices are required.
