How do people who inject drugs experience thecare they receive from nurses in somatic care? : A qualitative literature review with structured approach (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: People who inject drugs are at increased risk of acquiring infectious diseases. Nursingcare of the patient group is characterized by several challenges including comorbidities, ongoingsubstance abuse, psychosocial problems, lack of knowledge and deficiencies in health care systemsincluding sub-optimal collaboration within systems. Specialist nurses of infectious diseases play a keyrole in organizing, leading and developing care interventions around this patient group.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe how people who inject drugs experience the care theyreceive from nurses within somatic care.

Method: A qualitative literature review with a structured approach. Qualitative studies or qualitativedata from mixed method studies were included. The chosen method of analysis was Braun & Clarke's(2006) thematic analysis model.

Results: Three themes were identified: a doubled burden, not being seen or heard and unexpectedlygood care. People who inject drug often experience negative attitudes towards them from nurses withinsomatic care. These experiences have several negative consequences.

Conclusion: The perception of nurses’ attitudes is an important part of the overall careexperience. Effective person-centered care requires a good nurse-patient relationship, for which nurses’attitudes are a key enabling factor. Further research focusing on treatment and care for comorbiditiesin vulnerable groups with an increased risk of contracting infectious diseases is proposed.
