Abstract [en]
Background: Gynecological examination can be both physically and psychologically challenging experience for women. Nurses play a central role in establishing a sense of safety and contributing to a positive care experience during the examination.
Aim: The aim of this literature review was to explore young adult women’s experiences of nursing support during their first gynecological examination.
Method: A general literature review was conducted, including the qualitative scientific articles were analysed using thematic analysis.
Results: The study resulted in two main themes: A holistic perspective in the care encounter and The importance of participation. These included four subthemes: Feeling vulnerable, Feeling secure with accurate information, Feeling seen, and Feeling trust.
Conclusion: Women’s experiences of nursing support during their first gynecological examination are influenced by nurses´ approach, the quality of interaction, communication, and involvement in care. Insufficient information, cultural factors, and previous sexual experiences may increase feelings of vulnerability, while respectful encounters and clear information promote a sense of safety and trust. Person-centered care is therefore essential, and further research is needed to improve communication and interactions in the context of gynecological examinations.
